Spring Awakening This alt-rock musical is based on the 1892 German play by Frank Wedekind, banned due to its portrayal of abortion, homosexuality, rape, child abuse and suicide. With music by Duncan Sheik and a book and lyrics by Steven Sater, the story concerns teenagers who are discovering the inner and outer tumult of sexuality. Spring Awakening won 8 Tony Awards including Best Musical, 4 Drama Desk Awards, and 4 Olivier Awards. 01/26/2012
Hansel & Gretel Engelbert Humperdinck's fairy-tale opera, with a libretto by his sister, enjoys a reputation for being darkly beautiful, true to its origins in Grimm's Fairy Tales, and a rich orchestration by Humperdinck, an acolyte of Wagner. The Resident Artists of Pittsburgh Opera take the major roles in this new production conducted by Glenn Lewis. 01/26/2012

Windows and Mirrors: Reflections on the War in Afghanistan Art, poetry, and personal witness come together around this traveling exhibit of 45 murals from artists across the U.S., shown alongside drawings collected from Afghan high school students about their daily lives.
